International Printmaker

For those who have been wondering where I have been in the past few weeks...well, I'm happy to say I have been busy!

The last time I did printmaking was 4 years ago when I did my Venice study abroad program and here I am sort-of reliving the experience in Brazil again.

I signed up for two 1-week workshops with Prof. Sheila Goloborotko, a brazilian artist that lives in NYC (she is a professor at Pratt Institute, which is how I managed to find her) in Museu Lasar Segall.

For those who have no idea what printmaking is I will briefly summarize, including visuals below.

First, you have to create your plate, mine is the one in the middle. Their's endless possibilities on how to do plates so I will not get into that.

This is Nina, lab assistant and who I practice my Portuguese with the most, she is inking a plate, adding color to it. Behind her is Sheila, my AWESOME professor!

Place our plate on the printing press with paper on top. Then have it go through...

... shortly after your art is revealed!! Below are some of the pieces I have been working on!
What do you think???

shout out to the BK!! These workshops are now sadly over, however, printmaking does not end there. I start on monday once a week in a new studio!

Wild times in the city!

Together with our first guests in Sao Paulo, Ivan and Deva we headed out to the Parque Zoologico de Sao Paulo. Although, we faced a fierce thunderstorm and Edwin faced his fear of snakes, we managed to have a good time!

Biggest spider I've ever seen!

The white tiger, endangered species, it was beautiful, my favorite!

Cattle Art

There is a cow parade going on in Sao Paulo, similar to what many of us saw in New York a few years back. These are some that we have stumbled into when we go for our touristy walks.

Artists are commissioned by a sponsor (usually a big corporation) and design them accordingly, all for charity of course.

Havaianas Cow

We're not sure who sponsored this one but it's interactive! You can go to its twitter page, post something and it will show in its belly screen, very cool!

Flippin' and Floppin'

The ultimate Brazilian fashion statement.

Havaianas started in the 60s and have been constantly growing since then.
For the World Cup '98 they launched a pair with the Brazilian flag printed on its straps and immediately became a symbol of national pride.

Their super creative design campaign has made the brand an international star. Starting at around $15, you can't beat the prices either.

Havaianas are sold literally in EVERY corner and come in many styles and colors.
You can even personalize them!

Edwin already has 2 pairs and I will be purchasing my second pair very soon.

Fun Facts: (thanks Wikipedia!)
- 2.2 billion pairs have been sold since its beginning in 1962.
- 5 pairs of havainas are produced per second.
- 2 out of 3 Brazilians own at least 1 pair.
